Work allowance explained

The work allowance is the amount you can earn before the UC taper starts. It’s the bit that explains why some people can earn “a little” without losing UC straight away.

What it is (simple)

If you qualify, UC ignores the first chunk of your earnings each month. Only the earnings above that chunk get hit by the taper.

Who usually qualifies

  • People responsible for a child (children on the claim).
  • People with LCW or LCWRA (limited capability for work / work-related activity).

If you don’t fit those, the taper may apply from the first £1.

Why housing changes it

If your UC includes housing costs, the work allowance is typically lower. That means the taper starts sooner. (This is one reason private renting can make extra hours feel worse.)

Quick example

If your work allowance is £300/month and your earnings are £700/month, the taper applies to £400. With a 55% taper, UC could drop by about £220.
